Saws have proved useful for hundreds of years. These tools have been used to branch out some niches based on the times, materials and technology required.
In today’s workshop and tool collection, a variety of saws are included, starting from the coping saws to hand saws.
Surprisingly, these saws are designed to be specialized in different tasks. There are other commonly specialized cutting tools but for this purpose, hand saws have come up the competition time and again and proved to remain a valuable tool.
Types of saws
Saws exist of two categories, based on the intended purpose and use. These two categories include the hand saws and the power saws. Each option can give you the same results but it is achieved in a different manner.
Hand saws have been known for their filling of niches and various cutting styles. Some of these saws have been used traditionally. But due to the improving technology, these tools are being designed for specific applications, for instance, the keyhole saws.
Obviously, no tool collection can be complete and full if one these hand saws are no incorporated, leaving alone the craftsmen who only purchase the tools which will tend to fit their personal usage patterns like trimming.
Hand saws are of the following types:
The back saws can also be called miter or Tenon saws, depending on the saw design, its intended usage and the region made. This is a relatively short saw, known for its narrow blade reinforced along the upper edge, hence the name back saw. This tool is specifically designed for use with the miter boxes. In some applications, it requires a consistent, fine and straight cut.
This is another type of the cross cut saw. It is much of home indoor uses than the outdoor purposes. The tool uses relatively a long blade with various and numerous crosscuts teeth which are greatly designed to remove any material through pulling and pushing. Bow saws are much used in trimming trees, cutting logs and trimming purposes. In some circumstances, this saw can be used in some rough cuts.
A coping saw is known for its narrow blade. It serves best when it comes to ideal trim works, scrolling and in some situations cutting purposes which require complicated and precised cuts. This saw is therefore used for cutting a variety of materials hence it remains a significant hand saw as compared to the ‘siblings’ in the same categories.
The crosscut saw is a specific purpose. This tool is designed to cut rough woods. Therefore, the saw has a thick blade, which is also designed with large and beveled teeth so as to fulfill and do its work comparatively well.
The 2-man crosscut saw also called the felling saws has a handle on each of its end so that it can be used with two people at the same time when it comes to cutting across or perpendicularly timber grains. However, the 1-man common saw is greatly used when cutting rough lumbers, trimming the limbs or branches. Therefore, the tool proves to be the best and excellent saw for any camping and for any job site.
This tool closely resembles the coping saw, because it also has a thin blade for making the intricate and complicated cuts. To bring the difference, the Frew saw tends again to have a long and large frame that allows any further cutting from outer edges. However, the saw’s blade cannot be rotated in this case. Hence, the tool proves to be tedious and difficult to use when performing the intricate scrollwork on various cutting positions.
This is one of the most common types of saws. It is known for its lightweight and versatility, and its ability to cut through woods, metal, plastic, and other materials. The tool uses some specific blades with total cut teeth of around 18 to 32 per inch. This saw is commonly used for cutting also pipes and in the tubing.
This saw is more precise than the back saw. It has the advantage of being able to reach places where the remaining saws cannot reach. The saw has single hand and a protruding, thin and strong cutting blade. Therefore, the tool is used to cut very hard and soft woods.
The tool is ever described as having a round handle with a single blade which protrudes from its handle’s top. The tool is basically used to cut rough circles and patterns. Keyhole saws can be essential for drywall, more when a small section requires being removed and replaced. Also, it can be used where the interior of the walls is preventing the use of powered tools.
Unlike the handheld saws, the powered saws have shown an evolution towards filling niches of their own category. They in some occasions duplicate the capabilities and purposes of the hand saws, even though this is not a complete replicate.
The types of power saws include the following:
Stationary band saw
This is a tall and floor-standing saw which uses large pulleys below and above its cutting blade. The saw is, therefore, able to move continuously with its fine teeth cutting through many materials. Band saws are perfectly used cutting pipes and tubing though they are limited to a depth of w few inches.
A chainsaw uses a linked chain with numerous ripping teeth which are specially designed. The chain saws are commonly used when it comes to tree work and hence essential to homeowners based on their regions.
This is one of the largest circular powered saws that are portable. The saw is manufactured in both masonry and metal cutting versions. These tools use a toothless blade which is manufactured with specialized abrasives designed for the materials that need to be cut. Chops saws, therefore, are used for this purpose and hence their name cut-off saws, abrasive saws or concrete saws.
This is one of the saws which is ideal for the use to trim or other special jobs which are involving precise measurements and some angle cuts. The common and simple miter saws can pivot up to 45 degrees to either left or right and 90 degrees straight cut.
This handheld saw is known for its short and fine teeth in its blade, which moves up and down at varied speeds. Jigsaw is one of the few saws designed for cutting curves and some non-straight lines. This saw is therefore used for cutting the curves and the non-straight lines.
With the existence of saws to perform various and specific roles, the tool collection has incorporated different tools for efficient work.
Surprisingly and in some situations, many saws are regionally called be other saw’s names ignorantly. With the knowledge provided in this article, an individual would have been wise enough to differentiate each saw and its use.
